Cloaca: Surgical Management and Follow Up

Pediatric Surgery
Dr. Shumyle Alam, specialist in pediatric pelvic and urogenital reconstruction, presents on cloaca surgical management and followup. Dr. Alam discusses a case study of a cloaca patient monitored throughout the course of her life. He covers topics on the neurogenic bladder, bladder management, measurement of blood pressure and glomerular filtration rate. The second case presented involved a cloaca with a 2 cm common channel. The patient eventually acquired the need for a kidney transplant. Follow up management was discussed involving frequent ultrasounds, annual measurement of GFR, and baseline formal urodynamics after 1 year of age in selected high risk cases. The second presentation was followed by a comprehensive panel discussion.
